Given that this came out in the 1860s I guess it was controversial and thought provoking at the time, but it has not transcended time as well as a lot of the works of Oscar Wilde have, which came into fruition a few decades later. As the name suggests, the novel revolves around the very concept of crime and the consequent punishment imparted for it. A very interesting book about 19th Century Russian society. The murders that constitute the titular crime occur early, and there is no mystery about who is responsible. Each edition includes an expert introduction and a beautiful cover image, and many of the titles retain their original illustrations. Heald not only ascribes a unique voice to each of the cast, but he delivers the dialogue as a stage actor would, with exaggerated emotion and even with laughter, coughing, stammering, and other adornments indicated in the text. Minor nudity, drug use, and blood splatters might make for a hard sell for classroom use.
I would recommend anyone reading this to skip the preface altogether and read the story first. Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2010. The quality is unreal levels of awful. And you will end up liking his writing so much, you will purchase other books (after this, buy The Brothers Karamazov).
