As Job sat in the middle of the storm, as he struggled with pain and loss few of us can even imagine, as he endured the attacks of his so-called friends, he didn’t lose hope because he knew his Redeemer lived. He is in deep despair that has gone beyond asking the question ‘why’ to simply asserting that life itself is hopeless. If his people are to join the everlasting song, they too must be raised from the dead. But this redeemer wasn’t simply a family member or friend who would stand up for him. That was certainly the position held by Eliphaz as we saw last week. Job does have a lot about which to complain.

The families of victims in this long litany of despair spanning just the last two weeks, as well as citizens and travellers impacted by the unimaginable violence, have all come to the same conclusion: “This does not define us. The victorious life God gives is the life in heaven our Redeemer won for us with his death and resurrection. In all of creation Job sees the possibility of new life emerging from death and despair…but not for him, not for human life. Job says that this Redeemer lived and would live forever.
