The undulating walk through Megalong Valley will take you past the abandoned Megalong Village, an historic shale mining village and through farmlands. Explorers Tree– This is the remains of a tall eucalyptus at the start of the trail at Pulpit Hill and has the initials of the great Australian Explorers- Lawson, Wentworth and Blaxland carved into it reportedly from their 1813 crossing of the Blue Mountains. The late Les Maxwell was a lonely figure as he operated a piece of council machinery alone near the cliff edge, trying to create fill for the road which ended being too steep (source: Smith, Jim, lectures in local history, Blue Mountains TAFE 1991).
