You will study the historical and social backgrounds of the books or paper artefacts in your care, to ensure that your approach to their conservation is appropriate and fully informed. Oral histories, which are nearly ubiquitous in archival and cultural heritage collections, capture first-hand accounts of their subjects and are particularly valuable resources as they often record the histories and memories of underrepresented people and groups. Over 6 sessions, this course covers risks to audiovisual materials; care and handling; inventory and assessment; planning, preparing, and implementing reformatting projects; managing digital audiovisual collections; and disaster preparedness and response. These digital assets represent a significant investment in both time and resources, and are often more fragile than we realize. Successful interdisciplinary collaboration is essential for meaningful conservation actions. Preservation problems associated with specific processes will also be studied. Participants will learn about the preservation activities that these tools support and receive a step-by-step instructional demonstration of the workflow in action.
